Computer-aided visualization and computer-aided design challenge the way designers have drawn for centuries—by hand. In relation to technological progress, the art of drawing remains relevant and critical to the success of the designer and to project outcomes. Why draw? To unleash creative potential. To create instantaneous understanding. To enhance quick thinking. To edit and refine ideas. To tap your unconscious mind and intuitive self. Owners hiring designers suggest that sketching and rendering can help design firms win jobs. In this session, explore the mind-body creative connection; the time factor involved in drawing; when to draw and when to use a computer; and applying knowledge to drawing. Take away a newfound appreciation of drawing by hand and by computer, and identify how it can impact your creative processes and enhance communication in profound ways.

What could be more daunting—and exciting—than designing a new restaurant for one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most revered buildings? Design-centric retail environments, aiming to attract customers and improve ROI, offer clever solutions and inspiration for hospitality. The two markets—often intertwined by location, ownership, convenience, and necessity—are each equally customer-centric and fashion-forward. Join Alison Embrey Medina, executive editor of retail design magazine DDI, as she moderates an expert panel of retail (and cross-discipline) designers on a discussion of how the two channels might learn and benefit from each other. The panel will examine design innovation and best practices in retail design and how those solutions may be implemented best in the hospitality market. Look at current retail market trends and their implications for design at large: the push to local; simplicity and authenticity; retail theater and customer engagement; state-of-the-art technology; and unique settings that attract and inspire. Take away eye-opening ideas that will change the way you design for hospitality today.(+/-)

Does such market direction bring opportunity for hospitality design service professionals? What best practices offer insight for hospitality designers working in this market, or trying to break in to a growth area? HD gathers owners and designers to talk about market similarities and differences, development issues, design innovation that improves care delivery and quality of life, and deciding factors for hiring designers and determining design direction. Our design panel will ask real-world questions of owner executives and examine market trends to watch now, then open the forum to audience interaction.(+/-)

Learn how color is trending in fashion, durable goods, the built environment, and why successful color must follow function. In part two, examine color as a powerful and often misunderstood tool. Stender evaluates the psychology of color and its biological and physiological influence on mood, energy, buying decisions (for example, do people really spend more money when surrounded by red and purple?), and more. Finally, she will delve into color based on cultural and societal distinctions (for example, do you what colors offend or please clients based on their ethnic heritage?). Take away knowledge that could give you an edge with your clients no matter what their ethnicity, age, or socio-economic level.

Ultimately, you will decide. Hear the finalists for the 2011 prize describe their concepts and projects in-depth, explore project merits with the jury, then vote on the winner. You will select the grand-prize winner and runner-up for 2011 with more than $10,000 in prize money at stake. The prize was established four years ago when JHG founder John Hardy and Hospitality Design Group vice president Michelle Finn began the competition to promote and reward innovation in our industry. The winners and finalists so far have been radical—from the reef-enhancing Poseidon Undersea Resort being built underwater near Fiji to the Oil Rig Platform and Spa, presented as a concept to reuse abandoned oil rigs as full-service resorts. In 2009, Pixel Hotel in Linz, Austria, took honors not as a traditional hotel but as decentralized guest suites (on a tugboat, in a gallery) with mobile operations. The 2010 winner, Mosaic, is a pod-based modular concept that provides seasonal lodging, low-eco-impact hospitality, or temporary accommodations in areas of catastrophe (earthquakes, fires, floods) as rebuilding occurs.
.1 CEU; 1.5 LU
*Got an innovative idea? Enter your concept or project in the competition at www.hospitalitydesign.com or www.radicalinnovationinhospitality.com between January 1 and March 31, 2011. Based on jury selections, the competition’s top four finalists will have their projects displayed at HD2011, promoted by a public relations firm, and published in Hospitality Design magazine. The top two finalists receive round-trip coach airfare and accommodation in Las Vegas, and take the stage at the conference to describe their entries—vying for votes and the grand prize.(+/-)

Professionally, is anything more important than your mentor? Mentoring can influence personal development, professional growth, intellectual achievement—and bolster attitude, drive, and self worth through encouragement, education, and kindness. A mentor’s wisdom, insight, depth, authority, and experience can mean all the difference to your success in work and life. In this think-tank, explore mentoring options and mentor types, learn what to seek in a healthy mentor-mentee relationship, discover how to adopt mentors if you don’t work for one, and, finally, discuss how to maintain an open, honest relationship with your mentors—for life.(+/-)
